What is the Ideal Self?-- Part III: Identity Achievement

Writer's picture: Dé Bryant, Ph.D.Dé Bryant, Ph.D.

When an individual has resolved an identity crisis and committed to a relatively stable set of beliefs or a course of action they have reached Identity Achievement. This stage may be a deepening of previous beliefs and actions or may be a pivot into an entirely new direction. The important aspect is stability and a sense of self that is new.

Identity achievement is not a static state, especially in respect to trauma recovery. As an individual works through their healing process they adjust their sense of self. The journey is not always swift nor in giant leaps nor even always in forward motion. The goal is to work the process of identity formation so that each achievement allows life to feel more authentic.

Successive approximations are the rule of the day. Learning to crawl before you walk, taking baby steps, choose an analogy. The point is to give yourself permission to keep growing and evolving.
